I’ve been meaning to write a blog on either Brexit or Trump for the last couple of weeks, but every time I try, the news just seems to spiral out of control. The assault scandal has been hidden in the background but is still lurking, Carwyn Jones is clinging on to his job, the budget was a waste of time, May refused and then u-turned on giving money to Manchester in the wake of the terrorist attack earlier this year, hundreds were killed in a Mosque in Egypt in an act of terrorism, a Bosnian ex-general on trial in The Hague drank poison before proclaiming “I am not a war criminal”, Michael Barnier essentially called Brexit a selfish decision, the 58 Brexit impact reports were released but apparently heavily edited, David Davis may be in contempt of Parliament as a result of that, North Korea has launched a new missile and claimed that they now have firepower that can reach the US Mainland and now Trump has retweeted Britain First videos and followed that by tweeting Theresa May directly trying to defend his absolutely indefensible actions. In all honesty, it’s a fucking mess.

It’s quite difficult not to write a blog and feel miserable afterwards. It genuinely feels like the far right is winning. Hate crimes have shot up since Brexit and Trump’s Presidency and that retweet further legitimises and normalises their views. Scrolling through the comments section on those Trump tweets or anything posted by Britain First is genuinely terrifying. The hatred shown towards the general Muslim popualtion is asbolutely venemous despite, quite obivously, the vast, vast majority of Muslims not being terrorists or affilliated with any terrorist organisation. It feels so painfully stupid that I even have to point that out. It’s also worth noting that Sikh’s and Hindus often get confused with Muslims and are attacked. It’s utter stupidity.

After Brexit, it wasn’t just Muslims that were being attacked in the UK. Hate crime rose against Central and Eastern Europeans and against the LGBT+ community. Scrolling through Twitter, the bile spewed against the Trans community is growing. I don’t think it’s that more people have harsher opinions, it’s just that the world we live in is allowing those views to be aired publicly without consequence. It’s genuinely scary.

Today though, I saw a tweet that truly made me think and relaxed me a little. It can feel sometimes like those on the right are gaining traction. The rise of UKIP, the massive shift to the right of the Tory party following Brexit and the election of Trump and those white supremacist rallies can engulf all feelings of progression and equality. It’s not much, but it’s worth remembering this:

All is not lost. Theresa May and many within British and American politics refuse to call out Trump for what he is – a bloated, orange, racist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, regressive, entitled, over-privilidged, think-as-pig-shit fuckwit – but there are many of us, both inside and outside of politics who aren’t afraid of his inflated ego or backwards beliefs. This is a fight, but it’s one with a cause worth fighting for and no matter how hard it gets, we need to fight against hatred in whatever form it takes when it’s ISIS, the KKK and even if it’s the President of the United States.
